Pitchfork Ranch has been in operation in Matagorda County since the early 1800s.  Emilius Savage received a Spanish Land Grant in 1829 and this was the beginning of what is now the Pitchfork Ranch.  His son Norman Savage continued the ranching operation and expanded to include raising horses for use on the ranch.  Norman first registered the two pronged Pitchfork brand in 1848, however, it was used by his  family prior to that time.  The cattle and horse ranching continued for two more generations by Norman’s son Greenberry Savage and his grandson Hamilton Savage.  In the early 1950s Hamilton shifted his emphasis to cattle and discontinued the horse breeding.  He bought his ranch horses from local area horse breeders.   The ranch continues to raise commercial crossbred cattle and is owned and operated by Barbara Savage Stell Holloway, the daughter of Hamilton  & Eva Savage.  In January, 2004 the Registered Quarter Horse Division was reestablished by Susie Stell Hutson, the great, great, great granddaughter of Emilius Savage.
